Hall of Fame

Today in class we talked about Michael Jordan's hall of fame speech and on the video we watched there was a man complaining about how Jordan gave his speech. He talked about how Jordan did not thank any one and seemed ungrateful for everything the Chicago franchise has given him and to a point I understood what he was saying, but then everyone in class had their points and I also agreed with them to a point.

I grew up an Indiana Pacers fan, mainly because I loved the way Reggie Miller played the game and that was how i wanted to play the game of basketball, so quite obviously I was not a Michael Jordan fan growing up. In fact, I could not stand him because I always thought he got away with so many calls. So I am not biased for the man. However, I think that this hall of fame speech is a little too much for people to be nit picking about. The man re-defined basketball, created an enormous amount of popularity in both the NBA and a pour franchise in Chicago pre-Jordan, and obviously won a ridiculous amounts of MVP's and Championships. Yet after all he has done for the sport, people can sit at there and complain about the way that he goes about giving his speech. Seems ridiculous.

The man did everything to make basketball what it is and simply because he appeared to be ungrateful for what he was given, people decide to punish him and call him a jerk and not want anything to do with him. I think it is a little unfair to do this to him. He has earned the right to talk about his accomplishments however he wants because as selfish as it is for Jordan to say it, the Bulls do not win 6 championships without him.

So maybe it was wrong of him to talk about himself in such a way, but to me he is fine and he will still be forever remembered as the greatest player of all time regardless of what he says.

  1. So, if you passed me the ball, threw me the rock, or popped up a sacrifice fly for me, would you be mad if I give all the credit to myself. No question MJ, "His Airness", G.O.A.T, or whatever you want to call him transcended the game of basketball, but to get to the top of the Empire State Building you have to step on 1860 steps. It might be nice to thank one of them for the boost. Jordan did do the work, he did have his "haters", and he did own Brian Russell to win his 6th championship, so yeah pat yourself on the back. But don't be somehow, so bitter, that you forget about the people that helped get you there.

  2. I totally agree with you and think that people are just making a big deal out of nothing. Jordan paved the way for players like Lebron James, and Kobe Bryant in my opinion people should be thanking him. I also agree with you when you stated that it is unfair to criticize him for not thanking certain people. We cannot tell him who to thank and who not to thank. He has his own mind and has the right to say what he feel

  3. I had a few opinions about Michael Jordan's speech and I have changed my mind a few times. I believe MJ deserves a free pass if he offended people with his speech because he essentially made the game of basketball and is an icon. MJ is the best basketball player ever to play the game and probably the most dominant player ever to play a sport. Saying this I still think that if he is such an icon and truly does represent basketball he needs to be a man and be appreciative of his Hall of Fame Induction rather criticize other people. Would Kobe Bryant, Jerry West, Larry Bird, or Magic Johnson have done the same thing? NO
